Peter D. Harper, known professionally only by his surname, is an Australian (raised in Perth, but actually born in Britain) singer, blues harpist and didgeridoo player – and that latter instrument is not there as a novelty just to pick up an odd world music lover or two, he integrates it well into his blues approach; take a listen to ‘Let’s Move’ for a good example. Harper’s blues sound is warm and catchy, sometimes funky, sometimes edging a little towards Americana, and good enough to have got him signed to US label Blind Pig. He is now based in Michigan in the USA and his accompanying band are all locals. You won’t find any “Sweet Home Chicago’ or ‘Dust My Broom’ re-treads here either – his lyrics tend to be positive messages of peace and love, delivered in a strong voice, though tending sometimes towards a more ethereal approach, as on the closing ‘I Look At Life’. A rather different blues sound, this – Harper himself calls it “world-blues”, and that fits well.
