I can’t recommend Woody Sez more highly (the Woody Guthrie Story told in words and Music by David Lutken, Wolfe Hogan, Ruth Clark Irons and Eleanor Brunsdon).
It is a warm homage, beautifully conceived and skilfully delivered, they not only do justice to the drama of Woodys story, but bring the songs alive in their authentic setting in a beautifully understated but equally dramatic fashion.
David becomes Woody and the audience suspends belief and are taken into his world. Unfortunately for everyone except anyone in striking distance of Alnwick Theatre tonight Friday 22 May this is the last one on this run. A run which started at The Edinburgh fringe, garnered more rave reviews in The Westend and has carried the spirit of Woodie Guthrie (which let’s face it inhabits everyone who knows things should be better) around the world. The show has played in Australia China and Palestine.
The multi talented cast not only deliver this impeccable performance they then instigated a Hootenanny in the bar after encouraging the audience to sing of and for Woody, which went off like a train (bound for glory) interestingly entertain not only their own audience but in equal measure, the audience now decanting to the bar from the Opera in the main theatre. Which after the initial shock soon became a remarkable classless culture fold.
It’s as I suspected Woody’s spirit lives forever in the heart and at the heart of humanity! It was a privilege to witness and as close as I’ll ever get to being in his company this side of the devide. http://ift.tt/1qAuBoK
