Fiver’s Simone Schmidt is taking the focus off of her solo project to deliver another album as the frontperson for Toronto folk rock crew the Highest Order.
Jangled guitar chords, jam-band licks and open range snare hits all help back Schmidt’s evening shade vocals. While at one point she muses on some interplanetary business, she mainly implores for a figure to “hurry down” and catch up with her on earth.
The influence of Gram Parsons and the Byrds is evident, but an even closer relative is the understated folk songs of Jennifer Castle. Like Castle, Schmidt’s lyrics balance poetic abstraction and specific detail that give the songs a subtly evocative quality.
