Formed in 2014, Cain Rising are fronted by Glasgow born and raised Southside Jimmy Price (vocals, guitar, mandolin, percussion), partnered by his long time collaborators and friends Jez Parry (bass, backing vocals) and Jo Parry (backing vocals) plus guitarist Kevin Blake, drummer Paul King and Dave Baldwin (Hammond organ, piano) an earthy Americana material rich in tempered East Coast rock ensues.
While some tracks are loaded in electric guitar and forceful rhythm you have reflective moments as in folksy ballad “Days Of Wine And Roses”. Price speaks of a time up of a man who worked on the banks of the Clyde, and was living (and praying) for the day of wine and roses as he sweated at his job. How he met a younger girl and made they way south on the A74, their lives in the back of their van. On looking back he reflects how there is nothing he would change he admits. Sounds autobiographical since Price did leave his beloved Glasgow in 1980 for England’s capitol.
Loaded in energy, and smart grooves Cain Rising keep up a relentless urging of good old fashioned rock’n’roll on “Jenny”, and with the likes of the well entitled “Restless” and higher-charged still explosive “Riding In Another Man’s Car” that ups the intensity the band keep the pot boiling. On utilising Hammond Organ “When Johnny Walked The Line” cuts an impressive groove, while he speaks of having seven little passwords to her soul on “Save Me” as he pleads for his girl to take him in.
“So Wrong” is a bustling little number fuelled with more organ and lead guitar it’s followed by the punchy rhythm powered “Better Stay Home” and it comes over favourably. Measured cut “Fool” boasting some hard biting lyrics digs deep into one’s soul. As for the closing track “Ride The Sun” it is a spare, sombre painstaking piece set to leave an indelible mark in the heart of the listener such Price’s sensitive delivery.
