George Strait to Present Lifetime Achievement Award at Americana’s

15th Annual Honors & Awards Show – September 21 2016

#RoadtoAmericanafest

I first came to appreciate Jim Lauderdale as a side-kick to Lucinda Williams on the wonderful DVD Live at Austin City Limits, on which the songs from Lucinda’s iconic album Car Wheels On A Gravel Road were showcased.

Since then I have seen him perform many times, either with his band, solo or guesting with just about anyone.  One of my favourite radio shows is his duet with Buddy Miller on Outlaw Country – man, that is a fine show when those two guys get going.  I have also seen him as host for Music City Roots and, for the past three years, witnessed him as MC of the Americana Honors and Awards Show (he has compered fourteen in all).

Many of his records and countless studio collaborations have been treasured.  Hell, I have even opened the door for him at Cannery Row in Nashville as he had his hands full (two guitar cases) and experienced his gentlemanly discourse a couple of times.

He is a multiple Grammy and Americana Music Association Award-winning musician and is one of the most respected artists working today.  Lauderdale’s latest album I’m A Song is his twenty-sixth album.  AND there is the 2014 documentary of him The King of Broken Hearts which tracks his journey from a small town in North Carolina to his exalted status today.

He has written and/or recorded with a remarkable range of roots music icons including Ralph Stanley, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Patty Loveless, Robert Hunter, North Mississippi Allstars, Elvis Costello, Williams, Donna The Buffalo, and Miller. His compositions have been widely recorded by marquee artists including George Strait, Vince Gill, and Shelby Lynne.

Jim Lauderdale will be the 2016 recipient of the Americana Music Association’s Wagonmaster Award, a special lifetime achievement honor reserved for the most valuable contributors to the course and history of America’s only broad roots music format.  The award, named for country music icon Porter Wagoner, will be presented on September 21 2016 by Country Music Hall of Fame member (and star of the Grand Ole Opry for decades) George Strait, a global star who has recorded more than a dozen of Lauderdale’s songs.  Lauderdale’s relationship with Strait has been especially fruitful and extraordinary, penning songs like “Where The Sidewalk Ends”, “What Do You Say To That” and “Twang.”

Strait will present the honor to Lauderdale at the 15th Annual Americana Honors & Awards show, held at the Ryman Auditorium, on Wednesday September 21 2016.  I cannot wait to participate in the rousing standing ovations that will unquestionably be a feature in what will be a wonderful, emotional evening.
