To Be Free is released an intrim project between her debut and second album. While I never heard her first record, Nashville recorded Better Days this wee appetiser is just what the doctor ordered. Glasgow-born, aspiring young act Healey is an excellent writer. Her tune “To Be Free” to the accompaniment of fiddle (Rebecca Brown), banjo (Sean Thompson) and upright bass (David O’Neill) to go with her own guitar and backing vocals of Paul Healy is exquisite. It wouldn’t be out of place if listed in the top ten of IBMA’s American bluegrass chart.
Healey’s second composition “Too Much Time” it likewise has a quality feel to it. A little more gritty and possessing a fine cutting edge as her pleading vocals tell it as it is. Covers of the Patsy Cline hit “Walkin’ After Midnight” and Hank Williams’ “I Saw The Light” make up the 4-track, and though recorded a zillion times both come through with credit.
While I can imagine “Walkin’ After Midnight” (I don’t think I have ever heard it performed with banjo) might be the one to see most listener’s ears perk up “I Saw The Light” was the one that did it for me. It is a fabulous production. I just love the fiddle and the seamless feel captured, it simply doesn’t get much better than this! I can’t wait to hear her sophmore album.
