Born in the UK, and partly raised in New Zealand, singer-songwriter Lucie Silvas’ career is on a roll. Now living in Nashville she has performed and written songs with the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert.
Her strong vocals and upbeat songs; mixed with a smouldering ballad or two see her span old and new pop country music ways. With a heavy leaning towards the latter it is like she had been doing it for years. Well she has been doing it for some time, because though Letters To Ghosts is her third album she debuted way back in 2000 with Breathe In, and followed it up a little while later with a record that sold over a million copies in Europe alone. Nashville has seen her change her expectations and career target, and with all songs on the record co-writes and the album co-produced by Silvas there is a more artful approach. Silvas is heard at her best on “Letters To Ghosts”, “Roots” and infectious, rhythmic ode “How To Lose It All” plus the understated “Shame”. This is where she provides the listener with something of a smouldering southern flavoured small town life. Underpinned with smart lyrics and a brooding rhythm it is the kind of song you could easily associate with Musgraves as it calls for judgement day. While the production does admittedly tread near the edge as far as over-production goes, it does manage to remain this side of the fence. Nice work, Ms.Silvas.
Others of note include the dreamy “Pull The Stars Down” and with piano-utilised “Villain” (the impassioned closing offering, “You Got It” it too goes for a more sedate, nicely cultured sound) with her very much in the singer-songwriter mode she provides a song with a more mature soulful feel. With so many vying for the same audience I feel her next step, given her greater experience against today’s rush of fledgling acts is in this more mature and measured soulful direction.
