Tim Williams began his music career in his native California back in the 60s, playing in coffee-houses before settling in Canada in 1970. He is still there, and he is still playing music, though these days he is rather more acclaimed. This album is totally solo, totally acoustic and totally blues-based, though with a definition of the blues that includes Mose Allison and Johnny Cash. Tim has a warm, attractive voice, and obviously his guitar playing (both slide and finger-picking) is pretty nifty – so too is his mandolin playing, as heard on ‘My Big Money’, a cover of a Big Bill Broonzy number. Other sources and inspirations that Tim mentions in his informative sleeve notes include Blind Boy Fuller (complete with mis-heard lyric), Tampa Red, Lonnie Johnson, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Geoff Muldaur, and his four original compositions fit right in alongside them extremely comfortably. For a solo blues album, this is surprisingly accessible, and is of course recommended.
