The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band – The Front Porch Sessions (2017)

The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn BandThe very title The Front Porch Sessions suggests what Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band deliver on their sixth album: stripped-down, simple, down- home blues. Reverend Peyton began using the term Front Porch Sessions back in 2014, when he started posting live clips recorded on his front porch onto the internet, but this 2017 album was indeed cut in a studio: Farm Fresh in his native Indiana. It may have been made in a professional studio, but The Front Porch Sessions delivers on the intimacy and immediacy of its title, while also sounding very, very big. Almost of this lies on Reverend Peyton himself, who has a muscular howl that tends to overshadow the other two members of his big band, but that’s by design. The Big Band deliver a big sound by focusing on a down-and-gritty…

83 MB  320 ** FLAC

…groove, a boogie that naturally comes to the forefront on the handful of instrumentals, but is also felt when Peyton is bellowing his lungs out. This palpable sense of soul, combined with a strong set of songs — there are a handful of standards, including Furry Lewis’ “When My Baby Left Me,” along with solid originals — elevates The Front Porch Sessions to the very top rank of the Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band albums.

For six years straight, the Turnpike Troubadours have celebrated a self-appointed holidays each Spring called Dia Del Gallo at the historic Floore’s Country Store on the outskirts of San Antonio. The city has always been a crossroads of cultures, and the rooster (“gallo” in Spanish) has always been the band’s official mascot.

Slobberbone – Bees and Seas: The Best of Slobberbone (2016)

If Uncle Tupelo were the Minutemen of the alt-country explosion of the ’80s and ’90s, then Slobberbone were the Replacements. Uncle Tupelo were tight, wildly energetic, and overflowing with both ideas and principle. But Slobberbone were sloppy in the best kind of way, charging forward with beer-sodden passion that obscured the fact they could effectively kick out the jams.

Slobberbone were not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves, bellowing out tales of regular-guy lives that were often funny but also potently insightful. While they weren’t taken as seriously as some bands on the scene, they played and sang with a commitment that suggested their lives depended on this music. And like the ‘Mats, Slobberbone were in the right place at the wrong time. In a very real way, Slobberbone paved the way for the Drive-By Truckers, Lucero, and Two Cow Garage, but without enjoying the same recognition by being a few years early.

In their original lifetime, Slobberbone cut two good albums (Crow Pot Pie and Slippage) and two great ones (Barrel Chested and Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today). Bees and Seas: The Best of Slobberbone is a well-curated compilation that skims the cream from those four releases, and beautifully celebrates their greasy glories. These 18 songs demonstrate the consistent strength and shaggy-dog vision of Brent Best’s songwriting, confirming he was as good a storyteller as anyone on the scene. And on the best tracks, Best and his bandmates (Jess Barr, Brian Lane, and Tony Harper) explode like soggy firecrackers, giving the music messy but furious life. While Slobberbone have reunited for live dates, they have yet to return to the recording studio. Bees and Seas suggests they would have good cause to be intimidated by the strength of their legacy. But after hearing this, old fans and first-time samplers alike will probably think the same thing: the world needs more rock from a band like this. Until that day comes, Bees and Seas is a superb summary of Slobberbone’s brief but rich recording career. (The collection also includes a loving liner-note tribute to the group from Patterson Hood of the Drive-By Truckers.)

Front Country – Other Love Songs (2017)

Front CountrySan Francisco-based Front Country continue to defy the constraints that oft define bluegrass or string band music on Other Love Songs, a follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 album The Sake of the Song. While still boasting a traditional instrumental line- up (mandolin, banjo, bass, fiddle and guitar with occasional percussion) they push the envelope here with what they are now calling Roots Pop Music. True, the opening song (If Something Breaks) is somewhat akin to the sound they summoned up on the last album which led to quotes such the band having “the pop sensibility of Fleetwood Mac while retaining a woody, organic feel”. On much of the album however they rein this in for a set of soulful songs that, in the words of Melody Walker, “break down toxic romantic fairy tales.”

102 MB  320 ** FLAC

Walker, of course, is the focal point of the band. A powerful singer, gutsy and vibrant, here she blooms as a songwriter with eight of the twelve numbers written by her. She positively shines on the opening If Something Breaks as the band whisk up a radio friendly melody with some tremendous harmonies as Walker dissects the journey from young star-crossed lovers to older anxious partners with a magnificent sense of brio. Several songs convey this conflict between the perfect romance and reality. I Don’t Wanna Die Angry is a skirling example of the band’s virtuosity that opens with some delicate pizzicato before the gathering storm with Leif Karlstrom’s fiddle screeching away over some frantic string scrubbing. Undone is a real tear jerker, the band delicately tiptoeing around Walker’s impassioned vocals, weeping fiddle and dappled mandolin recalling the best of the LA Canyon session men back in the seventies as Walker slyly inserts a nod to that old junior choice favourite There’s a Hole in My Bucket as she sings, “with what shall I fix it.”

As much as Walker is the frontrunner here the band (mandolinist Adam Roszkiewicz, guitarist Jacob Groopman, bassist Jeremy Darrow and five-string violinist Leif Karlstrom) make their mark with Walker’s O Heartbreaker, a song about rebuilding a relationship after an affair, given a powerful timbrous punch while Rozkiewicz offers two numbers. T.H.A.T.S is a nimble instrumental showcasing the band’s roots and Sometimes It Does is a reflective essay inspired by a Bill Monroe story that allows the band to approach Appalachia with a slight Celtic nuance. A cover of Storms On the Ocean (a traditional song first recorded by The Carter Family) is given a blustery blues makeover (“We hope it both delights and offends” say the liner notes) and Jacob Groopman sings on the cover of David Olney’s Millionaire which is the most traditional sounding song here. Given a rousing string band delivery, it harks back to the glory days of protest songs with its tale of Tammany Hall type skulduggery and is apposite for these days.

The albums ends with Walker’s uplifting anthem Keep Travellin’ which again showcases the band as a well-oiled string driven thing as the words offer solace to those lovers mentioned earlier but which can also be seen as a bolster against these troubled times as she sings, “Just when it feels life is falling down and everything’s unwinding all around. Oh, honey, I’ll be there.” It’s a touching finale to a bold album.

Give Zac Brown credit. He listened to his fans, as opposed to speaking down to them about how music needs to evolve, or some other line of flawed reasoning where he could justify his actions to himself if nobody else. It’s hard to describe Zac Brown Band’s ‘Welcome Home’ as anything but what it is, which is a complete about-face.

Jack Grelle – Got Dressed Up to Be Let Down (2016)

Jack GrelleJack Grelle may sound like your typical heartland troubadour, but his down-home demeanor masks the soul and conviction of a principled man, leaving lessons in his wake.

The title track of his new album, Got Dressed Up to Be Let Down, is timely to a great degree. There, Grelle offers an affirmative nod to women who have been suppressed by society, a song Donald Trump ought to be force-fed continuously until he learns it’s not right to excuse bragging about sexual assault as mere locker room banter.

Grelle’s admiration for women is further affirmed on the folksy “Birthday Cards,” which sounds like a tune John Prine could — and should — have once called his own. Still, it’s the twang and charm…

78 MB  320 ** FLAC

…of “Changes Never Made” that offers the best example of Grelle’s unusual dichotomy. It may sound like a backwoods ramble, but listen closer and you’ll hear a plea for sympathy for the black community who feels like they’re always under siege.

Of course, this isn’t to say Got Dressed Up to Be Let Down is simply an album of socio-political barbs and pontification. Grelle’s ability to veer from down-home balladry to South of the Border interludes, to Cajun revelry and rollicking refrains makes this an album worthy of repeated listens, regardless of where you stand on the issues he addresses. Then again, if the messages come through the music, it’s all the better.
